Today we did the installation of a small presentation of the Royal damask of Margot Berkman in our DamaskWeaving mill. It was woven in the TextielLab.

In honour of the recent coronation of king Alexander artist Margot Berkman was involved in two special projects. In addition to the ornamental fencing that she created for the commemorative lime trees planted in towns across the Netherlands, she also found time to design an ornate royal damask. Our product developer Stef Miero assisted her in the execution of the table linen.

The symbolism incorporated in the fencing can also be found in Berkman’s lustrous white and white-orange damask. Inspired by the transparency of old lace and medieval calligraphy, her design incorporates elements that refer to the history of the Dutch royal family, known as the ‘House of Orange’. With its fruit and blossoms, the orange tree symbolises determination, immortality and solidarity, while the crown and sceptre are royal symbols. Both motifs appear in the damask.

The TextielMuseum continues to honour the tradition of giving memorial fabrics, providing designers and artists with a unique opportunity to develop modern designs in the TextielLab. The latest offering is a beautiful set of custom-made royal damask for the new monarchs, Alexander and Màxima, by the TextielMuseum and Margot Berkman.

The royal damask is also on sale in the TextielShop. It comprises a tablecloth, runner and napkins and is made of 50% linen and 50% cotton. The napkins are available in two colours; classic white and festive orange.

The festive overture was our presentation ‘Turkish red & more’ in the Dutch Ambassy in Milan. (see the contribution of Caroline Boot) During the Breakfast Debates organized by the The New institute together with Design Academy Eindhoven, Vera Sacchetti, editor of Domus, pointed out ‘Turkish red’ as being an excellent example of how to connect tradition and innovation, and giving insight into the process of making.

The nice exhibition by Dutch Invertuals with the overall theme ‘TRANSFORM’ was also a good example of how to link a process, starting from a concept and giving insight into the results. RAW COLOR developed their ‘Index Collection’ in the Lab.

Other interesting textile work were by Brit van Nerven and by Jetske Visser with ‘Hydrophobia’. At the presentation ‘Our House’, a presentation which dealt with sustainability, Jetske showed ‘Tide’, a plaid with subtle colour range woven in the Lab. She had painted the outside of yarn cones with natural pigments. Colours slowly immersed the mohair so only parts of the yarns get tinted. While weaving these yarns a perfect gradient in colour arises.

Lidewij Edelkoort and Raffaele Carrieri, curators of the small exhibition ‘Nomadism’, gave a key place to the tactile carpets young designer Daniel Costa developed in the TextielLab. The carpets, showing different surfaces, were made not only to look at them but also feel them and intriguing in aesthetic and tactile sense.

In Ventura Lambrate our first stop was at Prometteo gallery. The group exhibition of high standard showed textiles by Mae Engelgeer and work of Studio WM, who used the TextielLab for making the textile parts of their furniture and lamps.

At Zona Tortona, which sometimes feel s more like a luna park than an exhibition area we made a step into the future of night clubbing. Heineken Open Design Exploration for the second year presented the outcome of a masterclass for young designers of all branches to think about a new concept of club life. At the Magazzini space we were welcomed by beautiful ladies dressed in voluminous white dresses and body suits woven and knitted by our product developpers. The two designers of LEW also this year supervised the design process of young talent. Everybody received a white balloon filled with helium. All balloons attached to a softly floating textile surface at the ceiling – thus forming a moving sculpture. We are curious of the future, not only that of night clubbing.

As a librarian I want to share books from the library collection and the knowledge and beauty they contain with as many people as possible. So to me it’s special when these books are used to develop new products by designers. Showing the books used by the designers in the exhibition Turkish red & more, gives them another meaning. The books no longer are information sources, but also inspiration sources and beautiful objects. To me, old books always are beautiful objects, and now our visitors can see that as well.

Boaz Cohen (1978) and Sayaka Yamamoto (1984) are the Eindhoven-based design studio BCXSY. They are fascinated by the relationship between old and new, and between traditional and avant-garde. The traditional, richly laid dining table and the festive feeling that it evokes, is the starting point for their ‘New Perspectives’ project. Motifs such as artichokes, fish and shellfish, derived from the lavish spreads depicted in 17th-century still lives, were embroidered onto pristine white table linen using a computer-controlled embroidery machine.

Antique, hand-embroidered table linen or bedding, sometimes decorated with openwork patterns and elegant monograms, found in the museum collection, were sources of inspiration. In the library there is a collection of craft books from the early 20th century, with the type of embroidery which inspired Boaz and Sayaka. Here you can see some pictures from these books.
 

The designers even embroidered individual monograms, allowing users to mark and personalise their table linen, as was customary with damask.

Vorige week maandag waren we met enkelen van het TextielMuseum present in Milaan, om ter gelegenheid van de Salone del Mobile, een mooie presentatie te maken van highlights uit onze huidige tentoonstelling ‘Turkish red & more; designers and the museum collection’. Het Nederlands Consulaat ,had een ruimte ter beschikking gesteld , waar we met behulp van Italiaanse klusjesmannen de fraaie doeken van Formafantasma, het in het TextielLab geborduurde tafelgoed van BCXSY de zijdezachte dekens van Lenneke Langenhuijsen en het tafelgoed van Minale Maeda hebben geïnstalleerd. We kregen enthousiaste reacties, met name van de zeer vele bezoekers die op de door de ambassade georganiseerde avondreceptie af waren gekomen. De ambassadeur uit Rome was ook aanwezig, evenals vertegenwoordigers van het Ministerie van Economische zaken en van het Nieuwe Instituut. Iedereen kreeg na afloop van de receptie ons nieuwe Yearbook TextielLab mee!

Behalve op onze eigen presentatie waren ook op andere plekken in Milaan producten uit het TextielLab te zien. Zo presenteerde Mae Engelgeer haar in het TextielLab geweven ISH. collection. The zoetrope device was used in the early days of film to create the illusion of movement from a rapid succession of still images. The zoetrope was developed in 1833. The photographer Eadweard Muybridge developed a similar technique to show moving images, the Zoopraxiscope in 1879.

Muybridge’s career starts with photographs of Yosemite Valley which made him world famous. In 1872, the former governor of California Leland Stanford, a businessman and race-horse owner, hired Muybridge for some photographic studies. The governor wanted to know whether the horses have all feet in the air in trot and / or gallop or not. In this assignment Muybridge developed new photographic techniques to capture pictures of movement. Short exposure time of the film made it possible to ‘freeze’ the movement of the horse. When the images were shown in succession in the Zoopraxiscope, they give the idea of movement. The Zoopraxiscope pre-dates other techniques to show moving images.

The design studio Minale Maeda is one of the studio’s / designers invited to work with the museum’s collection for the exhibibiton Turkish Red & More. Minale Maeda began its research by looking for designed textiles in the museum collection: from the figurative to the abstract. The designers are fascinated by textile’s narrative elements, from the texture, colours and patterns, to the weaving and printing techniques. The designers from this studio were also fascinated by the zoetrope and the pictures of movement by Muybridge, The designers applied the idea of frozen movement to fabric, by digitally printing with a number of patterns borrowed from the museum collection. Digital technology, both in printing and in weaving, made it possible to slightly alter the patterns over a whole roll of fabric. No need to repeat the pattern as was the only possible way with Jacquard looms.

So why not make the patterns change similarly to images put in sequence and create an animation in the fabric, expanding the narrative quality of patterns and breaking up the monotonous part of the repetition, without going out of pattern.

 

The fabric was used to upholster a round bench. When the bench rotates, the patterns start to ‘move’. The same principle is applied to table linen, recalling Chris Lebeau’s ‘Narcis’ design from 1908.

Rotterdam-based Minale Maeda comprises Mario Minale (1973) and Kuniko Maeda (1976), both graduates of the Design Academy Eindhoven.

Vorige week vrijdag vertrok ik vanaf het Textiel Museum naar Parijs, de stad die me steeds weer blijft verrassen. In een paar dagen tijd hebben we inspirerende tentoonstellingen gezien, bijzondere mensen ontmoet en ook genoten van de Franse keuken. In La Gaîté Lyrique, een veelzijdig cultureel platform, hebben we de extravagante Griekse freelance curator Vassilis Zidianakis (van Atopos en Paper Fashion) ontmoet om zijn nieuwste tentoonstelling Monsters in Fashion te bekijken. Dit is een bijzondere expositie waar extreme mode-uitingen te zien zijn van grote namen uit de modewereld zoals Alexander McQueen, Martin Margiela, Craigh Green en Walter van Beirendonck. Een surreeël festijn van ontwerpers, die het kind in zichzelf weer ontdekten en op onconventionele wijze los zijn gegaan in hun creaties. In het gezelschap van Vassilis verkeerde een inspirerende oude Frans-Russische dame, die de weduwe bleek te zijn van de eigenaar van een van de grootste textielfabrieken van Parijs, gespecialiseerd in breien. Alle grote namen van Chanel tot Issey Miyake kwamen bij haar over de vloer. We zijn uitgenodigd om haar archieven die bewaard zijn te komen bekijken.

Op een geheel andere wijze maar even verrassend pakte een bezoek aan de tentoonstelling Cheveux cheris uit, een expositie over ´haar´ vanuit verschillende perspectieven bezien. Interessant was hoe je vanuit een bepaald thema op een geheel nieuwe wijze kunt kijken naar museumobjecten. Een aanrader! Te zien in Musée Quai Branly met bijzondere architectuur en een fantastische collectie etnografica. Meer klassiek, maar niet minder bijzonder vanwege het complete kostuumhistorische overzicht dat werd gegeven, was de tentoonstelling Fashioning Fashion in Musee Les Arts Decoratifs. Aan de hand van prachtige kostuums wordt de ontwikkeling van de mode tussen 1700 en 1915 in beeld gebracht, inclusief onderkleding en herenkostuums. Daarna hebben we nog een informele ontmoeting met de Nederlandse consul gehad, die goed bekend is met ons Textielmuseum en zeer geïnteresseerd is in cultuur.

Tot slot nog een verrassend uitstapje naar de noordkant van Parijs, naar Parc de la Villette waar zich het wetenschapspark Cité des Sciences et de l ‘Industrie bevindt. De laatste stand van wetenschap wordt op een toegankelijke en aantrekkelijke manier getoond. Futuro textiles trok daar mijn aandacht met verrassende toepassingen van textiel op het breukvlak van architectuur, design, kunst en mode. De mooie catalogus, uitgegeven door de Nederlandse Stichting Kunstboek direct aangeschaft. Bepakt en bezakt met boeken, nieuwe inspiratie en nieuwe leuke contacten terug naar huis gereden met een heerlijke lunch in Antwerpen. We hebben weinig paaseieren gezien maar daarentegen veel ideeën opgedaan. Nu aan de slag met de voorbereiding voor onze presentatie op de Salone di Mobile in Milaan.

Bont samples uit de collectie 'A hunt for high-tech' door Bart Hess, 2007 - 2008

Wie kent niet de slijmjurk van Lady Gaga? Minder bekend is dat de Nederlandse ontwerper Bart Hess hierachter schuil gaat. Afgelopen zondag opende zijn eerste solo-expositie – Hunt for high tech – in Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede. Ik was erbij en vond zijn films en vreemde, huidachtige ‘stoffen’ fascinerend. Het Textielmuseum heeft overigens vrij snel na zijn afstuderen aan de Design Academy Eindhoven (2007) werk van hem aangekocht, een met duizenden spelden bezette bontvacht Metal Fur en de film die eveneens Hunt for high tech heet.

Bart Hess kreeg zondag ook de Profielprijs 2013 uitgereikt. De voordracht berustte op zijn werk als materiaalonderzoeker en ontwerper van textiel en texturen die aan het lichaam zijn gerelateerd. Soms lijken de materialen als het ware een tweede, haast futuristische huid. Niet verwonderlijk dus dat inmiddels een modeontwerper als Iris van Herpen en een wereldberoemde modefotograaf als Nick Knight hem hebben weten te vinden!

Intrigerend en indrukwekkend was de slijm performance: een man in zwart pak, geheel bedekt met inktzwart slijm. Hij ademde door een buis wat een opbolling van het slijm veroorzaakte. Langzaam droop het zwarte goedje naar beneden, op de grond plasjes vormend…

Er wordt weer volop gehaakt, gebreid, gepunnikt en geknoopt! Het ambacht is ‘in’ en weer helemaal terug van weggeweest! Vorige week was er een bijlage van NRC Handelsblad gewijd aan dit fenomeen. Erg interessant! De bijlage is verschenen bij de tentoonstelling Hand Made in museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam.

In het TextielMuseum zie je regelmatig werk van kunstenaars en designers die, geïnspireerd zijn door oude technieken. Borduren, kantklossen en weven zijn niet meer stoffig. In de tentoonstelling ‘Turkish red & more’ is dit goed te zien. Voor deze tentoonstelling nodigde ik (CB) een vijftal ontwerpstudio’s uit om in ons TextielLab nieuw werk te gaan maken op basis van onze museumcollectie. De resultaten zijn nu te zien en worden na afloop van de tentoonstelling opgenomen in onze museumcollectie. Het mes snijdt hierbij aan twee kanten: de ontwerpers krijgen de gelegenheid om hun experimenteerdrift bot te vieren op de meest geavanceerde machines en wij kunnen de collectie aanvullen met mooie producten! Het BKKC heeft deze projecten gesubsidieerd. Op deze weblog en op Pinterest kun je de inspiratiebronnen van de ontwerpers zien.

Het gaat om werk van talentvolle ontwerpers, de meesten nog niet lang afgestudeerd aan de Design Academy of de Rietveld Academie. Caroline heeft de meesten gespot op de jaarlijks terugkerende Salone del Mobile in Milaan. Binnenkort start de Salone del Mobile weer. Een aantal medewerkers van het museum zal de Salone bezoeken en ik (CB) zal er zeker verslag doen…

In de tentoonstelling zie je hoe oude technieken inspiratie zijn voor nieuw design. Maar in de maand april kun je ook zelf aan de slag. De maand april krijgt van het TextielMuseum de titel ‘MacraMEE’. De knooptechniek macramé is weer ‘in’. De prachtige, door Studio Formafantasma vormgegeven, tentoonstelling ‘Turkish red & more’ ontlokte vorige week een delegatie van Ikea een groot compliment: ‘Wat een fantastisch museum is dit: het combineert de traditie (stukken uit de collectie) met eigentijdse vormgeving, geproduceerd in huis, namelijk het TextielLab.’ Men had dit nog niet veel gezien! Wij stonden natuurlijk te glimmen van trots!! Met deze tentoonstelling haakt het TextielMuseum in op ontwikkelingen in de ontwerpwereld om tradities, de eigen geschiedenis en vakmanschap een plaats te geven. Het gaf jonge ontwerpers de opdracht om, uitgaande van de rijke museumcollectie, een aantal producten te ontwikkelen.

Zo ontwikkelde Studio Formafantasma (Eindhoven), onlangs uitgeroepen als één van de 20 meest talentvolle en promising ontwerpbureau’s in Nederland, het project ‘Turkish red’. De naam van de tentoonstelling is hieraan ontleend. Het zogenoemde Turks rood, een uitgesproken helderrode tint gemaakt van meekrapwortel, is een van de meest onderzochte kleuren in de textielgeschiedenis. Deze verfstof werd ontwikkeld in India, en vond later zijn weg naar Griekenland en Turkije. De heldere kleur viel in de smaak bij uiteenlopende culturen en groeide uit tot een van de eerste voorbeelden van globalisering.

Grasduinend door het archief van de historische collectie van het TextielMuseum, raakte Studio Formafantasma gefascineerd door de Driessen-collectie: notitieboeken, stalen en proefdrukken over textielverven en -bedrukken. Formafantasma liet 17 zijden doeken helder rood (Turkish red) verven met meekrapwortel. Er werden ontwerpen op gedrukt, ontleend aan de patronen uit de boeken van Driessen en andere visuele verwijzingen naar de geschiedenis van Turks rood. De titel van het project, BTMM1541, verwijst naar de codering van de boeken in het archief van het museum: de 17 zijden stoffen zijn in lijn daarmee ontworpen als de pagina’s van een boek met een voor- en achterplat.

Based on a very personal world of girls, black and white flowers, birds, gossamer threads and structures, Merel Boers’ work – in which fashion and illustrations are intertwined – provides an enchanting escape from reality. For the TextielMuseum, she was inspired by examples of tatting and macramé from the museum collection.The library has a collection of craft books from the 19th and 20th century which Merel found very inspiring.
 

Merel Boers designed ornamentation, which was embroidered onto water-soluble material using a high-tech embroidery machine. When the material dissolved, graceful flowers and plants made from black threads were left behind. Derived from the aesthetic language of Art Nouveau, they recur in the resulting delicate outfits. The designer’s refined signature style is unmistakably evident in the final product. She offers us a glimpse into her imaginary world, where her sketchbook seems to have come to life.

In the exposition you can see the beautiful Art Nouveau fabrics which inspired Merel. Designs for batik, damask, upholstery, wall hangings, and curtains with butterflies, flowers, asters, swans, dragonflies, stars, and rosehips by influential designers from the start of the 20th century: Theo Nieuwenhuis, Michel Duco Crop and Chris Lebeau.

Merel Boers (1981) graduated in 2006 from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. The charming icon from her graduation collection, Miss Blackbirdy, has been the central figure in her designs and illustrations ever since.
